The Academy - Rangatahi Sport for Life programme has been established to support students who would like sport to be an important part of their life, whether it be in competing, coaching or working in the sporting industry. The programme is designed to support students through their sport journey over their time at Sacred Heart College.
In the year 10 programme the focus will be on self-care and development of the athlete/person for a future in sport. This differs from the year 9 programme that centred on students experiencing different sports.
The programme is open to year 10 students in 2026 only.
The proposed activities for 2026 are:
- Strength and Conditioning – Weekly after school sessions in the gym
- Nutrition – An expert in this field to run sessions
- Cross Training - Sessions at a gym in the area to develop an understanding of this area
- Coaching/Officiating skills – An expert in this field to run sessions
- Mental skills – An expert in this field to run sessions
- Sports day – An opportunity to have a try at sports on one full school day. We will survey the students early in 2026 and run a day of sport based on these responses in term 4 2026.
Sport New Zealand - Ihi Aotearoa - would like to see more women and girls as leaders, working, coaching, and volunteering at all levels in physical activity and sport, see article - Balanced Female Health. At Sacred Heart College we are committed to addressing the inequities for women and girls in sport by offering opportunities for our students to participate by providing many sporting options.
The programme intake is 25 year 10 students each year. The sport department will run the sessions with the help of the PE department and outside facilitators.
Students will attend strength and conditioning sessions weekly after school and once or twice a term on a Monday afternoon (subject to change if an outside provider is not available on a Monday). The focus will be on developing good habits for continuing in sport for life.
