A Call to Listen and Serve

Last Sunday, the Church celebrated Vocation Sunday, a reminder that each of us is called into a relationship with God to live a life with purpose.  Vocation is not only about religious life or marriage; it is about how we are called to live, to love, and to serve each day.  It was fitting that this reminder followed so closely after ANZAC Day, when we paused as a nation to remember service, sacrifice, and care for one another, particularly at a time when peace in our world feels so fragile.  The ANZAC spirit calls us to stand alongside one another with courage, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility for the common good.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks as the Good Shepherd, saying, "My sheep listen to my voice".  This invitation to listen is at the heart of vocation.  It requires us to slow down, to be attentive, and to recognise where we are being called to respond.  Jesus also reminds us that He is the gate, a place of welcome, safety, and belonging, through which we find guidance and protection.

Jesus promises, "I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full".  Those who choose to enter through the gate, who listen and respond with trust, are drawn into a life that is rich with meaning, peace, and purpose.  This fullness of life is found in service, recognising the needs of others and bearing witness through our actions as much as our words.

As we begin Term 2, we return to our shared vocation as a school community: to walk alongside our young people, supporting them to flourish academically, socially, spiritually, and emotionally.

As part of our Senior Kōrero ā Whānau, I again encourage families to take time to connect with your student's teachers.  These conversations are important.  When whānau and school work together in partnership, our young people are given every opportunity to succeed. It is a three-way partnership of student, whānau, and school, grounded in trust, communication, and shared commitment.

May this term be one where we listen deeply, serve generously, and continue to choose the path that leads to life in all its abundance.

Peace be with you.

Katrina Kerr-Bell

Farewell

It is with a mix of sadness and pride that we announce Paula Davies will be leaving us, having accepted an exciting new position with Challenge 2000 Leadership Team as their "Youth Ministry Formation Charism Lead". While we will certainly miss Paula’s presence and the positive impact she has had on our team, we are also proud and delighted to see her step into this significant leadership role. It's wonderful to see our staff continuing to nurture faith and support the formation of young people, and Paula's new journey will undoubtedly inspire and enrich many.

Please join us in congratulating Paula and wishing her every success as she embarks on this new chapter. We look forward to hearing about the difference she will make in her new role and hope to keep in touch.

Service in Action'

Student Mackenzie Knight (AV9FT) assisted Anzac/Poppy Day collecting with Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Robertson.

On Saturday, we commemorated Anzac Day, at a time when peace in our world feels particularly fragile. We remembered the Anzac spirit of courage, service, and above all, caring for one another.  Thank you to Sueanna William Ah Ken and Mia Tutagalevao for representing the College with dignity and pride at the community observance.

Attendance

We are pleased to note that our attendance rates for Term 1 are higher than they were in 2025. 70% of students are at school 90% of the time. There is still room for improvement. If your student is unwell, please keep her at home and notify the school. We do have a nurse practitioner at school on most days, should you be unable to secure a doctor's appointment. To contact the nurse, your student simply needs to send a Teams message with "nurse" to arrange an appointment.  If you are struggling with your student's attendance, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us for support.

Jazz Combo Trip

In the last week of Term 1, our very own Jazz combo band got the exciting opportunity to compete at the 48th National Youth Jazz competition held in Tauranga. This event featured many other schools from the North Island and we were very lucky to be one of them. This was our second time competing at this event and after weekly practice sessions we managed to achieve our goal of scoring Bronze, after scoring "Emerging" last year. It's been awesome to hear our band's improvement in both our musicianship and technique, and we are all very proud of our progress and achievements.  Thank you to Mr Isaacs and Mr King for driving us to the competition.

The Year 13 Civics and Year 13 Pathways classes visited Parliament on Wednesday 29  April. Swimming

Congratulations to Maddie Wilson (S12LP) who competed at the National Age Group Championships (long course) in Hastings over the school holidays 8-12 April. Maddie had a successful meet with the following results:

Gold 16 year old female 50m freestyle

Gold 16 year old female 50m butterfly

Silver 16 year old female 200m freestyle

Maddie will shortly be in Auckland competing in the New Zealand Opens (long course) in the 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle.  We wish her all the best for this event.

Basketball

Well done to Vaiola Papalii (AU9KF), Nevayah Marino (AV10VS) and Sophia Rose (AV10VS) who competed at the U16 Regional Representative Tournament for Hutt Valley.  Hutt Valley lost to Wellington and Porirua so they will not progress to the National Competition but they won against the Wellington Development team and really held their own on court.

Nevayah (U15) and Vaiola (U13) also played for Waikato in the Hoop Nation JSC Competition.

Sacred Heart Values

(Based on Gospel values and imbedded in all school policies and practice.)

Mana Atua –  a heart for God

We contemplate Mana Atua, the power of God, through God’s great love, represented by the Sacred Heart. We aspire to the spiritual virtues of faith, hope and charity.

As a community we pray together daily because “There in the sanctuary of his heart, he will keep you gathered together.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Tangata – a heart for people

We uphold Mana Tangata, the power and dignity of all members of our community, by showing manaakitanga – generosity and kindness, respect and inclusion.

Our strength as a community comes from following the cardinal virtues of wisdom (prudence), dignity (temperance), courage and justice.

“Be kind to everyone; give everything a good interpretation.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Tipuna – a heart for our ancestors

We gain spiritual strength from Mana Tipuna, the Mission Sisters’ Charism and our school’s Catholic heritage.

The RNDM charism is “contemplation, community and mission”. Their mission is to take light, wisdom and social justice to the world.

“We are all missionaries. Let us strive to imitate the qualities of Jesus.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Matauranga – a heart for knowledge

We value Mana Matauranga, the power of a depth and breadth of knowledge and the education of the whole person. We aim for personal excellence and seek to realise our all-round full potential.  Behind our motto “Virtue and Knowledge” is the goal of gaining wisdom. “Whaia te maramatanga” – pursue enlightenment (wisdom).

“Develop their hearts and minds.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Whenua – a heart for the land

We honour Mana Whenua, the power of our earth, in our care for the environment and our aspirations to live in harmony with it. This is our place which we value. The three guardian spirits of Atawhai guard us, and our place. Mana whenua is also about protecting our wholeness and wellbeing as young women.

“Seek the fullness of life for the whole of creation.” Euphrasie Barbier
