Heartbeat

Issue 10 - June 2026

From the Principal/Tumuaki

What a wonderful way to conclude the term with the vibrant celebration of HuttFest. It is a joyful and powerful expression of culture, identity and community. My heartfelt thanks go to our student leaders, staff and whānau who have truly been the "village" behind this event. Your commitment and energy made it a very special occasion for all of us.

Throughout June, we have also taken time to reflect on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion reminds us of Christ's deep love, compassion and mercy. As a Sacred Heart community, we are called to live these values each day, showing kindness, acting with courage, and placing others at the centre of our actions. May we carry this spirit forward in all that we do within our college and beyond.

This week marks the release of the first set of Common Assessment Activity (CAA) results, particularly for reading. For some students, this may bring a sense of disappointment. It is important to remember that these assessments are part of a longer journey. There is time ahead to grow, improve and ultimately achieve success before leaving school. If there are concerns, I strongly encourage students and whānau to reach out to staff. We are here to support every learner.

Attendance continues to be a key priority for us. Regular attendance is essential for learning, wellbeing and preparing young people for life beyond school. Please be proactive in communicating with the school if your student is away. If she is unwell, we ask that she stays home to recover fully. Otherwise, being present at school each day is vital for her success.

Looking ahead to Term 3, I will be on sabbatical leave. I am pleased to share that Maria Kerr will be Acting Principal during this time, supported by Ngaira and Sinapi. Anna Peszynski and Sarah Jane Clifford-Duncan will also be assisting the Senior Leadership Team. I have every confidence in this team's leadership and thank them in advance for their service to our community.

As we approach Matariki, we are reminded of its three guiding principles: remembering those who have gone before us (Matariki Hunga Nui), celebrating who we are today (Matariki Ahunga Nui), and looking with hope to the future (Matariki Manako Nui). These themes resonate deeply with our values as a Sacred Heart college. May this season be one of reflection, gratitude and renewed hope for each of us.

Cross Country - CSW and NZSS

A great achievement for Madison Wos (S12LP) who came third in the CSW Senior Girls race held last month.

At last Saturday's NZ Secondary School Cross Country champs Madison placed 6th in the Senior Girls event.  She has also been selected to represent New Zealand in an upcoming event in Australia. Congratulations on this amazing achievement.

Rugby Union U15 Weekly Competition

Our U15 Rugby team played a great final with a close loss to St Mary's 29-19.  Going undefeated the whole season is a massive achievement for the team.  Thanks to Simon and Claire Malaeulu for supporting our students with their rugby.

Squash

It was great to have two of our students Kora Gee (LI9LH) and Ella Laban-Walsh (AU10SC) competing in Division 3 at the CSW Squash Tournament.  Congratulations to Kora for winning Division 3.

Swimming

Great swimming news with Madeleine Wilson (S12LP) taking home the Pru Young Memorial Cup for achieving the fastest time overall in the Girls 50m Freestyle event at the CSW Swimming Individual Champs and Huia Cup Relays.  So impressive when this achievement is the second year in a row.

Congratulations to Madeleine for being selected as a non-travelling reserve in the New Zealand 2026 Youth Olympics team competing to Dakar in October/November this year.  She has been selected for the 100m women's freestyle event. Congratulations Madeleine.

Table Tennis Weekly Competition

Our Table Tennis team played the grade final against St Bernard's Gold. The team came second in Division 3 and it is fantastic for them to reach the final being the only girls' team in the grade. Team members are Rena Murata (AU12EB), Abi Calian (S11RL),  and Ranya Lal (LI9LH). Thanks to Isabel To'ia (SHC 2025 Head Student) for managing the team.

Other Events

Badminton

Congratulations to Alycia Chong (LO11UC) and partner Jovan Joby from St Bernard's for winning the Wellington under 19 Mixed Doubles championship.

Sacred Heart Values

(Based on Gospel values and embedded in all school policies and practice.)

Mana Atua –  a heart for God

We contemplate Mana Atua, the power of God, through God’s great love, represented by the Sacred Heart. We aspire to the spiritual virtues of faith, hope and charity.

As a community we pray together daily because “There in the sanctuary of his heart, he will keep you gathered together.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Tangata – a heart for people

We uphold Mana Tangata, the power and dignity of all members of our community, by showing manaakitanga – generosity and kindness, respect and inclusion.

Our strength as a community comes from following the cardinal virtues of wisdom (prudence), dignity (temperance), courage and justice.

“Be kind to everyone; give everything a good interpretation.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Tīpuna – a heart for our ancestors

We gain spiritual strength from Mana Tipuna, the Mission Sisters’ Charism and our school’s Catholic heritage.

The RNDM charism is “contemplation, community and mission”. Their mission is to take light, wisdom and social justice to the world.

“We are all missionaries. Let us strive to imitate the qualities of Jesus.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Mātauranga – a heart for knowledge

We value Mana Matauranga, the power of a depth and breadth of knowledge and the education of the whole person. We aim for personal excellence and seek to realise our all-round full potential.  Behind our motto “Virtue and Knowledge” is the goal of gaining wisdom. “Whaia te maramatanga” – pursue enlightenment (wisdom).

“Develop their hearts and minds.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Whenua – a heart for the land

We honour Mana Whenua, the power of our earth, in our care for the environment and our aspirations to live in harmony with it. This is our place which we value. The three guardian spirits of Atawhai guard us, and our place. Mana whenua is also about protecting our wholeness and wellbeing as young women.

“Seek the fullness of life for the whole of creation.” Euphrasie Barbier
