Heartbeat

Issue 4 - March 2026

From the Principal/Tumuaki

We have a group of students and staff heading to Samoa for the first time. This trip has been a long time in the planning, and it provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to put their language learning and cultural understanding into action.

As part of their preparations, the whole school has generously donated stationery to take to the schools they will be visiting. Thank you to everyone who contributed, your kindness will make a significant difference to the communities our students will meet.

This is a meaningful reminder for us during our Lenten journey to pause and reflect on an important question:

"Whose voices and needs in my community may be being overlooked or minimised? Who is helping them, and can I play a part?"

Your donations, support, and encouragement embody this spirit of compassion and service. We are deeply grateful.

Caritas Prayer:

E te Atua,

Open our hearts, Lord, to our own blindness, that we may see your life in others.

Help us to set aside ourselves and our own prejudices, to hear the truth in others’ stories.

Āmene

Seeking Volunteers

Sacred Heart College is looking for volunteer reader / writers to help us support students with class related tests and assessments over several days.

You will need good handwriting, spelling, and communication skills. Typing ability may also be an advantage. Training would be provided.

For more information please contact Supported Learning Lead / SENCO Kate Baird via email [email protected]

Wireless Headphones for Assessments

Polly is a text-to-speech tool designed to assist students with reading difficulties during assessments.  It allows students to listen to text being read aloud, which can be particularly beneficial for those who prefer auditory learning.  If you have wireless headphones surplus to your requirements, we would really appreciate them. If students have wireless headphones can they please bring them to school for their use, for assessments only (ensure they are named).

Peer Support

The Peer Support Leaders have done a great job helping settle the Year 9s in during their orientation days, and supporting and connecting with them at camp. It's been lovely popping into each of the classes on Wednesday afternoons, and seeing the fun activities taking place between all the Year 9s and their Year 12 Peer Support Leaders.

Next term, Peer Support continues, but in a different format, taking place regularly throughout the term during the morning Ako time.

This means that as of Term 2, on Wednesdays all Year 9s will finish school at 2.35pm, the same time as Years 10-13.

Buses continue to run at their normal times so Year 9s are able to either walk to Queensgate and get a bus from there or remain at school and catch their regular school bus after 3.20pm.

ESOL Class

Our ESOL class has been learning about New Zealand history. We read about The New Zealand Wars (Ngā Pakanga o Aotearoa) and the ANZACs in Gallipoli. We read about how ANZAC biscuits were made and sent to the troops overseas. Of course we had to have a go at making these traditional biscuits. Luckily the recipe is easy so we were able to measure, make and bake them during our ESOL lesson on Thursday. The students were fantastic bakers and the biscuits tasted delicious.      Mrs Bronwyn Davies, ESOL Lead / HOD English

Sponsorship - O'Shea Shield

In 2026, from Thursday 14 May to Saturday 16 May, Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt is proud to host the O’Shea Shield Speech and Drama Competition. Students will be travelling from as far away as Nelson, Napier, and New Plymouth to participate.

The competition will involve approximately 290 students competing over two days in a range of categories including impromptu and prepared speech, oratory, debating, religious questions, drama, and scripture reading (in both Te Reo Māori and English).

The O’Shea Shield has been a proud tradition since 1946, fostering excellence in communication, critical thinking, and performance among young people. Hosting this event involves significant costs, approximately $35,000, which cover hospitality, catering, badges and adjudicator fees.

We are seeking sponsorship to help make this event a success. Any level of support would be greatly appreciated, and in return, we will actively promote your business throughout the weekend, including in printed materials, signage, and acknowledgements during the event.

Your contribution will help us continue this valued tradition and support the development of confident, articulate young leaders.  Spectators are welcome to join us throughout the event.  We will be posting a timetable of events closer to the date.

We are after small donations or sponsorship of anything up to $1000.

If you are able to offer support please contact Katrina [email protected] or Business Manager Sam Chan [email protected]

Other ways you can give support

Baking – if anyone would like to provide baking for the O'Shea Shield, we would be extremely grateful.  If it is brought into the school office in an ice cream container, we can freeze it and bring it out for the event

Sacred Heart Values

(Based on Gospel values and imbedded in all school policies and practice.)

Mana Atua –  a heart for God

We contemplate Mana Atua, the power of God, through God’s great love, represented by the Sacred Heart. We aspire to the spiritual virtues of faith, hope and charity.

As a community we pray together daily because “There in the sanctuary of his heart, he will keep you gathered together.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Tangata – a heart for people

We uphold Mana Tangata, the power and dignity of all members of our community, by showing manaakitanga – generosity and kindness, respect and inclusion.

Our strength as a community comes from following the cardinal virtues of wisdom (prudence), dignity (temperance), courage and justice.

“Be kind to everyone; give everything a good interpretation.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Tipuna – a heart for our ancestors

We gain spiritual strength from Mana Tipuna, the Mission Sisters’ Charism and our school’s Catholic heritage.

The RNDM charism is “contemplation, community and mission”. Their mission is to take light, wisdom and social justice to the world.

“We are all missionaries. Let us strive to imitate the qualities of Jesus.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Matauranga – a heart for knowledge

We value Mana Matauranga, the power of a depth and breadth of knowledge and the education of the whole person. We aim for personal excellence and seek to realise our all-round full potential.  Behind our motto “Virtue and Knowledge” is the goal of gaining wisdom. “Whaia te maramatanga” – pursue enlightenment (wisdom).

“Develop their hearts and minds.” Euphrasie Barbier

Mana Whenua – a heart for the land

We honour Mana Whenua, the power of our earth, in our care for the environment and our aspirations to live in harmony with it. This is our place which we value. The three guardian spirits of Atawhai guard us, and our place. Mana whenua is also about protecting our wholeness and wellbeing as young women.

“Seek the fullness of life for the whole of creation.” Euphrasie Barbier
