This was part of their 3.9 assessment, where they had to devise strategies for a physical activity outcome. The Holdsworth Circuit is a 24km hike over steep bush and ridge line terrain, so was a huge effort and showed evidence of both mental and physical strength and endurance.
After a final bag check we left school for the Tauranga National Park, and by 3pm we started the climb up 'Gentle Annie'. After over four hours of not so gentle steps, we reached the cosy Powell Hut, where the log burner and clear starry night kept the students in top spirits.
Day Two involved a walk up to the top of Mt Holdsworth and then along the ridge to Jumbo Peak, before a steep descent into Atiwhakatu Hut, where we stayed for our second night. This is a hike only possible in fine weather, so we were delighted that the winds were low, the sun was out and consequently the views were incredible! Students enjoyed their meals cooked on gas stoves and the quiet hut at bedtime was evidence of a big day walking.
After cleaning up and final pack, we walked out from Atiwhakatu on Friday morning. Despite a bit of a sun shower, it was warm and the students appreciated the easier terrain along the river back to the carpark.
A huge 'well done' to all the students who came on this hike and a massive thank you to Mrs Haynes and Mr Baxter for your energy and support on this wonderful trip.
